The Institute of Philosophy at Leibniz University Hannover invites applications for the position of a

Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in Philosophy of Biology (Salary Scale 13 TV-L, 100 %)

starting February 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is limited to 29 months.

This position is part of the research project “Agency and Agential Explanation in the Evolutionary Sciences”, led by Professor Thomas Reydon. The project is funded by the John Templeton Foundation as part of the international cohort program Agency, Directionality, and Function: Foundations for a Science of Purpose. The successful candidate’s main task will be to conduct research on the development of new concepts of agency and agential explanation for application in the context of evolutionary research. The successful candidate will be based in Hannover, but will collaborate with other projects within the cohort program as well as with the Hannover-Paris project “The Explanatory Scope of Generalized Darwinism: Towards Criteria for Evolutionary Explanations Outside Biology” (GenDar).

To qualify for the position, applicants should hold an academic degree in an area relevant to the research project (typically a degree in Philosophy, HPS, (Theoretical) Biology, or a related area). A relevant doctoral degree (completed or recently defended) is desirable. Applicants should be fluent in English, should clearly demonstrate an interest in the topics of agency and agential explanation in evolutionary contexts and should already have conducted academic work on these topics.
