The commodification of science—often identified with commercialization, or
the selling of expertise and research results and the “capitalization of
knowledge” in academia and beyond—has been investigated as a threat to the
autonomy of science and academic culture and criticized for undermining the
social responsibility of modern science. In *From Commodification to the
Common Good <https://upittpress.org/books/9780822945796/>*, Prof. Hans
Radder <https://hans-radder.nl/> revisits the commodification of the
sciences from a philosophical perspective to focus instead on a potential
alternative, the notion of public-interest science.

At this event, we will revisit this book, and offer three other scholars
the opportunity to critically assess Radder’s arguments in his book, to
discuss the future of scientific knowledge in the 21th century. More
concretely, the book addresses three major themes, for which we have
invited three speakers:

   1. Federica Russo <https://www.uva.nl/profiel/r/u/f.russo/f.russo.html>
(University of Amsterdam) will comment on the relationship between science
   and technology
   2. Sigrid Sterckx <https://research.flw.ugent.be/nl/sigrid.sterckx>
(Ghent University) will comment on commodification, patenting and
   (economic) public goods in science
   3. Koen Vermeir
   <http://www.sphere.univ-paris-diderot.fr/spip.php?article233&lang=fr>
(CNRS) will comment on ideals of 'public interest' and 'common good' in
   science and technology

The *program* will look as follows, with plenty of room for debate with the
audience.
