Dear colleagues,

We are organizing a workshop on "Physics & Question-Answering Machines: Artificial Scientific Understanding?<https://www.lorentzcenter.nl/physics-en-question-answering-machines-artificial-scientific-understanding.html>" on January 22-26, 2024 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden (the Netherlands).

We are seeking contributions related to the use of question-answering machines (like ChatGPT) in physics research and the implications for scientific understanding. Potential topics include but are not limited to:

  1. Novel physics discoveries enabled by question-answering machines
  2. Using question-answering machines to generate explanations, model phenomena, or improve human understanding of physical phenomena.
  3. Assessing the "understanding" of physics exhibited by question-answering machines
  4. Prospects and limitations of current question-answering machines for scientific research, especially as related to scientific understanding.
  5. Ideas for improving question-answering machines for physics research

We invite abstract submissions for 15 minute talks on current research or perspectives related to these topics. Abstracts should be around 300 words long. Please include your name, affiliation, and contact information.

The deadline for abstract submissions is now November 30, 2023. Decisions will be made by early December.

Please email your abstract to kristiancampbell.gonzalezbarman at ugent.be<mailto:kristiancampbell.gonzalezbarman at ugent.be> with the subject "QAM Workshop Abstract".

We look forward to your contributions! If you have any questions, please contact the organisers.

Kind regards,

Sascha Caron, Tom Claassen, Kristian González Barman, Rafaela Hillerbrand, Henk de Regt, and Emily Sullivan.
