*Position Summary*

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a full-time
tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor specializing in
the Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Language, or related areas, with
competence in Artificial Intelligence or Computing Sciences. Diverse
methodological and theoretical approaches welcome. The anticipated starting
date for the position is July 1, 2024.

Teaching: 4 courses per year, together with the usual non-teaching duties.
Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications in
accordance with the Faculty Agreement as per the negotiated salary scales:

   - A PhD in Philosophy or ABD with a strong expectation of completing the
   PhD before July 1, 2024
   - A record of successful teaching and mentorship appropriate to the
   candidate’s career stage
   - A record of successful engagement in professional research, conference
   presentation, and /or publication appropriate for the candidate’s career
   stage
   - A plan for future research
   - A commitment to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion (EDI)
   through research, teaching, mentoring, and/or community engagement.

The Department of Philosophy is a unit within the Faculty of Arts of the
University of Alberta. It currently has 11 full-time academic faculty
members, including one Canada Research Chair, one continuing academic
teaching staff member, some 80 undergraduate majors and honors majors, and

The Faculty of Arts is the oldest and most diverse faculty on campus and is
one of the largest research and teaching centres in Western Canada (

Edmonton’s metropolitan area hosts a diverse population of nearly 1.5
million people, has a thriving cultural scene including restaurants, music
venues, art galleries, theatres, and internationally recognized festivals
(from Blues Music to Fringe Theatre). The city is also known for its River
Valley Park system, Canada’s largest urban park.

Edmonton has the second largest Indigenous population and the fourth
largest African-Canadian population of any Canadian city. Nearly 10% of
Edmonton's population is of South Asian origin and 16% of East and
Southeast Asian origin, with growing numbers of Edmontonians of Filipino,
Latin American, and Middle Eastern origins. Edmonton's school systems,
including but not limited to Edmonton Public School Board, Edmonton
Catholic School Board and the Francophone school board of Centre Nord,
offer French immersion and bilingual education for children in a range of
languages such as German, Hebrew, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin),
Punjabi and American Sign Language. At least two high schools, Amiskwaciy
Academy and Victoria School of the Arts offer Cree and Blackfoot as a high
