Dear All,
I am excited to announce a fully funded PhD-scholarship at the Centre for Science Studies, Aarhus University, as part of my project TREAT: Towards Responsible Explainable AI Technologies.
I've included a brief summary of the project and PhD position at the end of this email. Further details can be found in the following link:

Please share this announcement with anyone who might be interested in doing a PhD within the ethics and epistemology of AI. I am happy to discuss the project and position with anyone interested in applying, so do encourage potential applicants to get in touch with me (rune.nyrup at css.au.dk<mailto:rune.nyrup at css.au.dk>).

About the project and position:
TREAT explores the ethics and epistemology of Explainable AI (XAI) - that is, technologies for generating explanations of AI systems - with the aim of developing a normative framework for distinguishing beneficial from pernicious uses of XAI. Computer scientists develop XAI in order to make it easier to understand the decision making of complex AI systems. However, since such explanations are always partial or idealised, XAI risks creating a false or misleading sense of understanding.
The PhD-candidate will contribute to a work package on "explanatory honesty", which examines the boundary between helpful, understanding-supportive explanations and deceptive or manipulative uses of XAI. The ideal candidate is someone with knowledge of interdisciplinary AI ethics and philosophical interests relevant to the topic of explanatory honesty. This may include, but is not limited to, philosophy of science/technology or applied ethics (e.g., values in science, explanation and understanding, ethics of science communication, public health ethics).
The project team will include the PhD-student, a postdoc and myself, plus interdisciplinary collaborators from computer science, human-computer interaction, law and nursing. The project also has a decent budget for conferences and research visits abroad.
