Dear colleagues,

If you have strong students interested in doing a PhD in Cambridge HPS and fit the selection criteria for Gates scholarships, please encourage them to make contact with the potential supervisor well ahead of time. We encourage applicants to get feedback on their research proposal ahead of applying as this makes applications stronger and more likely to be funded. The deadline for US residents applying for Gates is October 15th, while for others it’s December 2nd (including US residents not applying for Gates). Thank you for forwarding this information to those who might be interested and qualified.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships for MPhil and PhD in History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine at the University of Cambridge (2026 entry)

The Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge invites applications for MPhil and PhD study (2026 entry) and particularly draws the attention of applicants who are US citizens normally resident in the USA to the early deadline of 15 October 2025 for the Gates Cambridge Scholarships <https://www.gatescambridge.org/>. Please note that, in addition to academic excellence and a compelling reason for the choice of course, the selection criteria for these highly desirable awards include a commitment to improving the lives of others and capacity for leadership. We encourage the strongest applicants to our MPhil programmes to apply for Gates funding and particularly urge those outstanding PhD applicants to apply who (with input from a prospective supervisor) can prepare a convincing proposal in time.

The rest of this message provides links to our programmes, advertises open-day workshops and highlights other Cambridge-based scholarships.

Our website gives full information about the Department, the degree programmes, the application process <https://www.hps.cam.ac.uk/study/postgraduate> and the research areas of the academic staff <https://www.hps.cam.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/phd>.

The Department offers two master’s programmes:

MPhil in History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine <https://www.hps.cam.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/mphil-hpsm>;

MPhil in Health, Medicine and Society <https://www.hms.hps.cam.ac.uk/> (taught jointly with Social Anthropology and Sociology).

For information about our PhD programme, see <https://www.hps.cam.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/phd>.

The Department will hold online workshops for MPhil and PhD applicants on Tuesday 4 November as part of the University of Cambridge Virtual Postgraduate Open Days. The MPhil session is at 3.45pm (UK time) and the PhD session at 4.45pm. Led by the departmental Director of Postgraduate Education (Prof. Nick Hopwood), both workshops will explain our admissions requirements and procedures, with advice about securing references and applying for funding. For PhD applicants, there will also be guidance on finding a workable topic and potential supervisors and writing a convincing proposal. To book a place on the Open Days, which run from 3 to 14 November, go to <https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/openday>.

Scholarship opportunities accessible by University-wide competition include:

  * Cambridge Trust Scholarships (MPhil and PhD)
  * Gates Cambridge Scholarships (MPhil and PhD)
  * Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholarships (PhD only)
  * AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards (PhD only)

Awards are also available through the Department, including an HPS Futures Widening Participation MPhil Studentship.

All applicants will automatically be considered for an HPS Trust Fund Bursary. If you wish to be nominated for other awards, please indicate this on your application form. You are encouraged to explore all funding options from other sources as well.

To be eligible for these awards you will need to submit your postgraduate application by 11.59pm (UK time) on 2 December 2025. (US Gates candidates have an earlier deadline of 15 October.) Initial offers of funding will be made in March, and awards will continue to be allocated until the application deadline has been reached or all the available funding has been committed.
